Yeah, it's a loooooong story arc in the books. I know it started in Volume 12, Issue 67, and the last one I read (I need to catch up big time) was Volume 18, Issue 104 and they were still doing the Alexandria arc. I'll catch up during spring break and tell you how long it goes on for. 
As for fans complaining about the show not following the comics: deal with it. VERY few things are unpredictable to me (I have kick-butt intuition) and when they kill people off at random times, it shocks me. Although, for the past two seasons, there's a pattern. Anyone added in the beginning credits during the theme song starting with season 4, has been killed off.
I'm behind by a LOT of episodes. The last one I saw was number 6, so I have to catch up on that too. I had some nasty medication changes, and then the site where I...uh..."obtain" the episodes not "entirely legally" went down for a while (we HAVE the channel on TV, but my dad, who just retired, records everything on Sunday, and I'm busy doing dialysis with my sister during the time of the show, and she's not crazy about zombies) and then school started for the semester and I haven't had the chance to catch up.
Yeah, I've had a very long week filled with middle school BS (I'm 32 and in junior college, so I wasn't expecting that stuff to happen)on top of everything else, so now I'm just rambling.
Anyway, I'll try to catch up ASAP (tomorrow maybe) so we can REALLY discuss all of this.
The comics are great. Graphic with lots of violence and naughty words, but that doesn't bother me. I highly recommend them for times when the show is on break during mid-seasons and after season finales, when you're CRAAAVING more.
I'm going to bed now.
